What We Provide
How You Can Help Donations
|
The Meals on Wheels program could not survive without the assistance of the many good hearted men and women of Prescott. The donated hours of labor that this group provides are significant. In most weeks that number exceeds 160…equivalent to four full-time employees!
Recruitment of volunteers is an ongoing task although many choose to provide service for years and years. The sense of satisfaction of helping those in need provides a powerful incentive to continue to contribute to our success. At any given time there are 100 to 150 volunteers required to serve our clientele.
Volunteers can serve in many capacities and for as many hours as they choose. Some of the areas of service are as follows:
Five days a week we serve meals in our friendly dining room. Volunteers are needed to serve on the food line, helping infirm clients with their trays, cleaning up and last but not least preparing over 300 meals per day for delivery to our home bound cliental and served in our dining room. Typically we have 8 to 10 helpers each day for this activity. In addition, the dining room has two receptionists who welcome and log in clients as well as receive donations for meals.
At the present time we have 10 routes and drivers are needed for this each day. Drivers use their own vehicles and receive a nominal 30 cents a mile for fuel. Routes vary anywhere from 8 to 30 miles. The number of clients on each route varies substantially and can change from day to day. Typically a driver will deliver around 15 meals. Drivers check on the well being of each recipient and enjoy a few minutes of conversation with those who are so inclined. For many of our clients this is their only daily outside contact.
Prescott Meals on Wheels maintains a resale boutique in the Rolle P. Simmons Community Center. This is usually staffed by two volunteers during the day.
In addition to the sales function, there is also a need for stock sorting and evaluation of the many items that are contributed to our program. Monthly our organization receives supplemental food commodities through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and volunteers are needed to sort and package that food for distribution to those in need.
