A Little Help Can Go A Long Way

As a nation, we have a special responsibility to our vulnerable populations such as the elderly.  Many of these Americans were raised in the Great Depression, they fought for our freedom in World War II and went on to make this nation a leader in the World.

But in spite of living in “the land of plenty” many of these citizens find it hard to afford, obtain, or prepare the food that they so desperately need to stay healthy.   Many have special nutritional needs and medical conditions that require balanced, wholesome and nutritious meals.

The demand for services such as provided by Prescott Meals on Wheels will grow at an unprecedented rate over the next 10 years.

Consider:

Of all the people who have lived to age 65 in the history of the world, more than half are alive now!

The numbers of persons over fifty are skyrocketing.  The 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 will nearly double the number of 50 to 64 year olds to 59 million in the year 2020!  The first of the “baby boomers” will reach retirement age in 2011.

In 1960 there were 940,000 Americans 85 years old or older.  Today that figure is 3.1 million and by 2020 will reach 5.4 million.

A surprising fact found in a study commissioned by the Meals on Wheels Association of America; seniors in the age range of 60-64 are most likely to be at risk of food insecurity!

The same study found that in 2005, five million seniors suffered from some form of food insecurity.  By 2025 this number is expected to double!

The challenge is great.  Only a third of the funds needed to operate Prescott Meals on Wheels comes from governmental funding, and that is always at risk.  For over 35 years the community has supported Prescott Meals on Wheels.  In some years, it has been literally hand to mouth.  (An appropriate term when you consider our mission!)  Were it not for the efforts of over 150 volunteers and our sponsors, there is no question that we would be unable to meet the needs of our clients.

We are asking for your support in building an endowment fund that will allow us to meet the needs of our growing senior population.  On the following pages you will find some alternatives for helping in our cause.
